Cant remember if that's called the Berlin Defence or what it is.
The "main line" then continues...
5. 0-0 Be7
6. Re1 b5
7. Bb3 d6
8. h3 0-0

I wouldn't say it's that bad for black. It's one of the few lines I'm happy to play as either white or black.

At work so can't check this but I'm pretty sure that's the line Kramnik played against Kasparov a few times in their match, often described as Kramnik putting up the 'Berlin Wall'. Kasparov couldn't break it. Since that match there have been some new moves tried for both sides. The main line takes you to a position with queen's off and a totally open centre. Not easy to play by any stretch, for either side.

Or am I thinking of the line with ...Nf6 instead of ...a6

For OTB I suggest 3. ...f6!?, opening surprise.

Or even ...f5 which isn't the soundest defence but over the board White (and Black but you'll learn the lines, right..?) has to play very accurately.

Its not trappy, its sharp, honest!

I play the Sicilian as black, which is the easiest way of avoiding the Spanish, but if you want to stick with 1. ... e5 and 2. ... Nc6 you could try the Berlin defence: 1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 - Game 1235663.

3...a6 is the Morphy Defence.

The Berlin is 3...Nf6.
