I wouldn't say it's that bad for black. It's one of the few lines I'm happy to play as either white or black.

Kasparov couldn't break it. Since that match there have been some new moves tried for both sides. The main line takes you to a position with queen's off and a totally open centre. Not easy to play by any stretch, for either side.

I play the Sicilian as black, which is the easiest way of avoiding the Spanish, but if you want to stick with 1. ... e5 and 2. ... Nc6 you could try the Berlin defence: 1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 - Game 1235663.
