Surely our only move here is 46...Nf4

Also playable might be Re3+ to take the f3 pawn and protect the h3 pawn after white moves out of check.

I vote 46...Re3+ too intending 47.Kb4 Rxf3 48.Nxa7 f6 49.gxf6 g5
and hopefully those 2 pawns will be helpful for us on the kingside.

True that c pawn is very scary I don`t really expect white to play48.Nxa7 maybe 48.c5 i would predict.

My fear is that the rook move is too slow - we are in a race to promote pawns - and that the knight move may be the way to go for this reason (it is a faster way to promote the pawn than the rook move, despite the rook move winning that pawn) - I will need to analyse this

I agree. Having the extra pawn doesn't help us that much. He has the clear cut c pawn march where as a rook on f3 doesn't really fit in with our plan. This whole position is very scary to me. To me, it can truly go either way and time is of the essence!

For the time being, I change my vote to 46...Nf4 -

I did not follow very carefully last discussions, but how is Nf4 supposed to help us promoting?

I really don't see a way that it does either. It does free the rook to move around though, whereas it can't after Rxf3 without abandoning the h pawn. This position needs really concrete analysis, not just practical ideas.

46. ... Re3+ 47. Kb4 Rxf3 48.c5

And

46. ... Nf4 47.c5 (And Others)

46. ... Nf4 47.c5 Rc6 48.Kb4 Ne6 49.Rxh3+ Kg7 50.Nxa7 Rxc5 MIGHT be a safe draw. I'm too tired to look at it now, but I think a draw is a reasonable result.

Edit: That doesn't look so good now that I've thought about it. I can't really see the h pawn promoting though. 47.c5 47. ... ???

I'm likeing this line more and more:

If he decides not to trade rooks, we have a draw. If we follow this line, I believe we have a win. (Though it would take a bit more work)
