2. e5 -- It transposes into the french, and it also gives white a strong pawn centre, especially on the square d5. Arriving at this position from 1. e4 e6 2. c5 would be more likely, but even then, this position seems a bit usual. It looks solid enough, though.

FabianFns: Got any statistics for us?

my guess for the next move:
2...d5

Sure, bosintang, here is some statistics:

Given that 1. c4 e6 as been played the followong moves are chosen wit respective percentage
2. d4 to 49.0%,
2. Nf3 to 21.0%,
2. Nc3 to 17.8%
2. g3 to 9.2%, totaling so far to 97.0%
Only after that we have the chosen
2. e4 with only 2.0%, very rare I would say.

Now this is a very unusual opening. Does it make the game more interesting or less interesting?

I will say "Knight to f3". It is a fair opening move, attacking 2 central squares, and removing a piece for a kingside castle. Commonly preceeded by a d4 move, but works either way.

No. As long as "unusual" doesn't imply "poor" for either side it depends on the individual if he/she finds "book" openings more or less interesting.

2...c5 to grip the weakened d4 square.

Thanks. How about if we switch the move order so its 1.e5 e6 2.c5 ?

I would like to know why we don't see this opening more often. It seems solid enough to me.

2... c5 fights for the center, but if this player isn't as passive and would want to play a more open, aggressive game, then 2... d5 is probably up next.

Do you mean 1. e4 e6 2. c4?

Hmmm....this is more complex than I thought.....If I've made errors feel free to show me to the light 🙂

1.cxd5 exd5 2.Qxd5 Nc3....

^ In this Line White will gain some tempo (with Nc3), however this comes at the cost of an Isolated d-pawn, which is a permanant weakness...

In essense: -- short term pro, long term con

1.exd5 exd5 d4 dxc4 Bxc4...

^ Again, a lead in development (with Nc3) in exchange for an isolated pawn

1.f3 dxe4 fxe4 [Nc3?] Qh4+.....

^ advantage Black

1.Nc3 dxe4 [d4?] Nxe4 f6

^ advantage Black

1.d3 dxe4 dxe4 Qxd1+ Kxd1

^ advantage black

What other realistic possiblity have I missed?
