In 1975 Karpov would have been 24?
He dominated from 1975 until 1985.
If their was a 1975 world chess championship Karpov would have won.
Fischer seen his games and as most know Karpov could play in a solid slow way.
I don't think boobies aggressive style could beat a solid player like Karpov.
Attackers win tournaments. Defenders win world championships kind of thing.
Spassky is one of the weakest world champions.
I think boobies knew he couldn't win so he ran away. Scared.
The Soviets were not executing chess players, so boobies paranoia was just that.
Paranoia.
In 1992 he came back and played who?
An aged Spassky.
He avoided Karpov again.

I'm so tired of hearing Americans talking about chess and Fischer and they know nothing of chess or Fischer.
They just throw names out and when I ask them questions they quickly show they know nothing other than his name and he was American.

Also...
I'm tired of American chess players thinking he is the best of all time.
I've got him in the top 10 but not the top 5.

Also...
These great players who are born somewhere and come to the U.S.A are not Americans. Technically yes they are Americans but if they win the world championship it will have an asterisk next to their name.

Who is American born that can take the title?

Edit: yes that was a rant but I'm so tired of hearing people say Fischer's name every time they hear about chess. Typical lames who don't know anything about chess.

2nd edit: When he was caught he ran to Iceland. He's a runner.

Thank You for that deep insight. Personally I didn't like Bobby Fischer much, but you're talking about the actions of a man who was clearly dealing with some severe mental issues, so calling him childish schoolyard names is pretty pathetic.

Those mental problems came after.
He wasn't mental when he won.
He became mental when he realized his next opponent would beat him.

Fischer - Karpov, Lasker - Rubinstein, two great matches never played. We'll never know.

I was referring to Karpov's ability vs Fischer's.
I wasn't referring to all the world champions.

"In 1992 he [Fischer] came back and played who? An aged Spassky. "

Fischer had aged as well and was 20 years out of practise.
Spassky was 55, Fischer was 49, a difference of 6 years.

Why not play Karpov?
Why play the guy you beat instead of the guy you ran away from?

In 1992 Karpov had other commitments.
He had accepted an invite to Linares and he had a
World Championship FIDE semi-final with Short. (Karpov lost)

Karpov said one regret about no 1975 match was it would have made him
a very rich man. Then when asked about the outcome he has given in the
past all three different replies. He wins, he 'possibly' losses or simply does not know.
But he has always said it would be a very very difficult task.

The feeling is amongst practically everyone is that Fischer wins in 1975. Karpov in 1978.

The reason being how Karpov cracked under the pressure of just a few off the
board shenanigans in the '78 match. He was leading 5-2 and then lost 3 out of
the next 4 games. The off board incidents,v Fischer and the world press and
political pressure would have got to Karpov, who then was not the polished player he later became.
(Korchnoi and Kasparov go for a 1975 Fischer win - they should know.)

Come 1978, he would have been wiser, better and won.

Fischer did not run away. He resigned his 'FIDE' world title.
(He still considered himself the World Chess Champion.' )
They would not agree to his conditions so he walked.
He had a history of walking away when he did not get his own way.
In this case everyone lost. Karpov, FIDE, Chess and it's fans.

These Americans that you mentioned and their Fischer craze may be old
codgers like me who were there in 1972 and took up the game because of him.

You really had to be there in 1972 to see the impact this man had on the game.

The prize fund for the 1969 Petrosian - Spassky World Championship match
was $1,400.

The prize fund 3 years later? $120,000 and then Jim Slater added another $120,000. Chess had arrived big time....at last.

Don't let the Americans upset you, give or take a few generations they are still
Europeans. Our cousins from the colonies.

I was playing some black Americans and I dominated so they called me white Fischer.

White Fischer! They were in their 20's and they considered Fischer to be the greatest ever...and black!
I tried to explain to them that Fischer was white. They refused to believe me.

@greenpawn34

Wasn't the 1992 match worth 2 million?
Wouldn't Karpov make more with that match? Instead of the WC?
I've heard Fischer got 2 million and Spassky got 800 thousand.
