These great players who are born somewhere and come to the U.S.A are not Americans. Technically yes they are Americans but if they win the world championship it will have an asterisk next to their name.

In 1992 Karpov had other commitments.
He had accepted an invite to Linares and he had a
World Championship FIDE semi-final with Short. (Karpov lost)
Karpov said one regret about no 1975 match was it would have made him
a very rich man. Then when asked about the outcome he has given in the
past all three different replies. He wins, he 'possibly' losses or simply does not know.
But he has always said it would be a very very difficult task.
The feeling is amongst practically everyone is that Fischer wins in 1975. Karpov in 1978.
The reason being how Karpov cracked under the pressure of just a few off the
board shenanigans in the '78 match. He was leading 5-2 and then lost 3 out of
the next 4 games. The off board incidents,v Fischer and the world press and
political pressure would have got to Karpov, who then was not the polished player he later became.
(Korchnoi and Kasparov go for a 1975 Fischer win - they should know.)
Come 1978, he would have been wiser, better and won.
Fischer did not run away. He resigned his 'FIDE' world title.
(He still considered himself the World Chess Champion.' )
They would not agree to his conditions so he walked.
He had a history of walking away when he did not get his own way.
In this case everyone lost. Karpov, FIDE, Chess and it's fans.
These Americans that you mentioned and their Fischer craze may be old
codgers like me who were there in 1972 and took up the game because of him.
You really had to be there in 1972 to see the impact this man had on the game.

was $1,400.
The prize fund 3 years later? $120,000 and then Jim Slater added another $120,000. Chess had arrived big time....at last.

Wouldn't Karpov make more with that match? Instead of the WC?
I've heard Fischer got 2 million and Spassky got 800 thousand.
