A few days after reading that blog, I did my first ever promotion to a knight. Getting the check stopped me from having to throw away my own rook to prevent my opponent's pawn from crowning. Almost certainly I've been in positions where knight-promotion was the best move before, but didn't have the idea in my mind. Seeing these little things is the way my game improves (slowly). Thanks GP.

Hi Robin.

Was it an OTB game? Any chance of seeing the game?

"...to prevent my opponent's pawn from crowning." 🙂

Have you been playing checkers with the chess pieces again? 😉

It was a blitz game on FICS:

It was already a won game by the time of the underpromotion but I was excited to spot one anyway!

OK - I don't go to other sites to look for games.

I make that now 3 pints you owe me. 😏

That game Ian John Campbell - LusoCanuck RHP Ch 2012 in your blog, where black though up a piece, had the wrong color bishop to prevent a draw, reminded me of a recent clan league I played against a stronger player.

I am black. My opponent white to play below.

As black, I felt like if I could sac my N into his g-pawn (which I ultimately did), then I had the draw. His bishop was the wrong color to prevent the draw at h8, and could never displace my K from that corner without a stalemate. My black king had position, he would end up with only the B and the drawish rook pawn, and his wrong color bishop would be of no help to him.

A few more moves and the position was clearly a draw (diagram below). I felt lucky to get the draw after blundering earlier in the game and especially against a stronger player.

Good alert play. There are a few lads on here who have resigned against
the wrong Bishop and Rooks pawn.
