ME!

I play on playchess.com or whatever and get routinely crushed. To me I think it's almost like a different game altogether. I find that I try to find the best move which takes too much time and end up losing on time too often. It's fun though and I'm going to focus on it more when I can get my standard rating better.

I have the same problem but with 1 minute per side. You have to adjust your style or practice until you get better.

It takes practice. 5 0 seems slow to me because I've been playing 3 0 regularly for several years. Last time I played 5 0, though, I blew an easy win.

The same with me, that's why I usually play 10/0 or 15/0. But I guess der schwarze Ritter is right and practicing would help.

Me too! The shorter the time control, the worse I play. Period. And its been that way since I was a teen. My main problem is tactical blunders. I think there's no real way to fix it anymore...

I don't like playing 5 0 or 3 0, because if you have an easily won position, I don't like that the clock can still run out on you. If you play 5 3 or 5 5 or even 3 3, you know that if you have an easy win, the clock won't run out on you, but it still put enough time pressure to make for a fun game.

I always play 4 minutes no add ons.

Anything longer allows players to 'muli-task' and you end
up playing a box. Same delay in between moves, no blunders
and no traps is a dead give away.
Not really seen it on here - why bother? No grade.
But other sites....I don't play there anymore.

A knowledge of opening traps, experience, instinct
and a quick tactical eye is the key.
(also don't dither on forced captures or obvious safety moves
(9.Bd2 & 13.Be2 in the game below).

Here is a typical blitz game of mine.
Black falls for an opening trick - I develop, push and poke.
Knowing where my pieces go by 'feel'.
Black's play starts to deteriorate in the last few moves as the clock takes it's toil.

All I am looking for in the end is the crucial mating pattern.

Having said that I still find calculating odd on a monitor.
It's like playing chess on a postage stamp.

Nice game, but you missed 22. Bxf6 and mate next move.

Correct - I'm glad someone spotted my deliberate error. 😳

Another Tip:

When you see a winning line stick to it and don't waste
time looking for other methods. g4-g5 pressing on the pinned
pawn was what I saw and went for it.

(I told you I missed things on theese wee screens.)

(note to self....sh76 is a wise guy) 😉

I am just beginer but my Corresponding Chess performance is better than Real Time Chess/ Blitz. I also get crushed at playchess.com.
