I don't work for this site. This is not a plug.

Here is a picture of it, so you know I didn't make it up.

I guess I bought my set around 1996 or so.
It is just one of those cheap $6 plastic sets with an extra pawn and queen on each side.
The board is folding cardboard.
One one side is a regular board.
On the flipside, is the 9x9 board.

In theory, it's possible, although it would require an incredibly stupid opponent. You can easily do this with a computer by moving both sides of the board, with one side cooperating and allowing it to happen.

Dood was in the mood to show a game with 8 pawns promoting
and when the last White pawn promotes to a Queen....

...Black delivers checkmate. (40 moves).

He posted it on the Probelmists Club forum - I've asked him to post it here.

See what wonderous things you can do with a chess set and fertile mind.

Wow!

I'm going to remember that and in the last round of a congress,
if I have nothing to play for, I'll get my opponent to play along.

I want to see the controller running around getting all those
extra Queens.

I think white is better here. He could take the initiative and devastate blacks position.

I stand corrected. Black has mated white in a few moves.

Outstanding again SG.

Now revenge for all those PG's you set me that destroyed my sanity.

OK you got 18 Queens on the board.
But can you get 18 Rooks on the board?

(that's not as silly as sounds - you cannot play the same moves
and under promote - you need things to capture to get the pawns
to avoid each other and change files and you cannot take Rooks anymore.

I don't think it can done) 😏

Wait a minute...10 White Rooks + 8 Black Rooks = 18
Nah! imposssible.

Here is Doods one - all the White pawns promote and Black mates.
Although not as good as SG's (Dood also agrees) it has it's place.

This thread is simply oozing with creativty.
A brain, a task and a chess set. What more can anyone ask for?

If it is possible to have 9 white Q:s and 9 black Q:s on the board in the some time, then I am sure you can have 9 white R:s and 9 black R:s on the board at the some time. I don't know how, but it must be possible 😛

I higher the stakes right now 🙂
I am sure there could be 10 white R:s and 10 black R: on the board at the some time. My question is: How can you do that with so few moves as possible ?

I thought about the 20 Rooks problem.

For the pawns to pass each other they must swap files.
They cannot take each other as every pawn is required to promote.

For eight Queens to appear both sides had six pieces they could capture.

But to get 20 Rooks each side has only 5 pieces it can capture.
I think that one less piece will make a difference.

So that's why I figured you cannot get 20 Rooks on the board.

If it can be done then SG & Dood are the guys - they will do it.

Why not give it try yourself.

Fascinating thread. 🙄 You folks have WAY too much time on your hands, imo. Time to take up a hobby - ever considered checkers? BG😉
