Of course they knew, but back then that behaviour was either socially acceptable or just not talked about. Remember all those casting couch stories in the 50s and 60s? No young and pretty girl trying to get into movies could escape those powerful white males, and it didn't do you any good to complain because people either didn't believe you or said "so what?"
