Originally posted by sasquatch672Yeah, it sucks. Seeing as you have to pay a license to watch TV, and money only goes to the BBC, it should be seen as BBC is pay-to-view television. I would rather not pay it, I could find a much better package of programmes with a cheap cable deal.
So you pay a cable bill AND a license fee?
That's definitely enough to put somebody on a water tower with a high-powered rifle.
I watch more programmes on C4 and C5 now than BBC.
EDIT: In addition, as a student, I find the halls are visited regularly by inspectors to try and find license dodgers. I also recieve regular letters, rather threateningly worded, saying how if I am using a TV they're going to catch me and prosecute me to the full extent of the law.

I thought the non BBC channels got all there money from adverts? How much of the lisence goes to them?

Almost everyone moans about the licence. What they fail to realize is that the existence of the commercial channels is probably costing them more. And it's a charge which is virtually impossible to avoid.
Advertising costs are passed on to the consumer. Whether they own a TV or not. Remember this when you watch the BBC. At least they're giving you a choice.
Ban the TV licence
Surefire dodge is just buy a black and white licence its about £25 for the year..As u have a licence (albeit a black and white one) ..they never bother you

What do you think pays for the BBC world service, the most listened to radio station in the world?
The BBC is obliged to put on an x-amount of kiddies programmes, documentaries, news, etc. These are high quality (although watching the 6 o'clock news nowadays is like having a hole drilled into your brain) and other channels are forced to compete. This raises the whole level of programme making.
Go to the US, Holland or most other countries and you'll soon see the tripe they're forced to watch.
Never mind the scurge of society...adverts....good grief, if anything gets me winded up into a hated frenzy of foul language, it's sitting through 5 blocks of adverts every film....
Just thinking about it plays havoc with my bowel movement.

What sort of quality programmes do they produce? Yes. They'll have an odd hit like the Simpsons or Seinfeld, but the majority is garbage.
I reckon that a top 10 all time comedy hits from nearly anyone will include at least 3 or 4 BBC productions.
Same for drama.

1. Seinfeld
2. Blackaddder (BBC)
3. Filthy, rich and catflap (BBC)
4. Monty Python (I believe BBC)
5. Southpark

Personally, I'm not anymore, but I never used to pay it.
I still wouldn't if I wasn't such a coward about getting caught, but I begrudge every penny now that the BBC has lost most of it's sport to Sky, and the only things worth watching are documentaries - and once we lose His Highness Attenborough half of those won't be worth watching anymore.
Hmm - maybe I should have put this in the Debates forum?...
I haven't had one for over 5 years now and am not missing it a bit
1.) News I read online (times, die welt, le monde ... everything there)
2.) Sports I watch either with the neighbour or in the pub (more social anyway)
3.) The stuff I really want to watch I either buy on DVD or download ... With a 24-inch computer screen, this is really painless ...
I simply don't buy into all the crap BBC (and especially all the other channels) are showing ... And then all the ads (gee, I wouldn't stand that for one night) ...
just my 2 cents

If you like Blackadder etc. ... try
1.) Green Wing
2.) 2 pints of lager and packet of crisps
3.) Fawlty Towers
4.) Red Dwarf
They're all pretty good me thinks
