We should follow the Swiss example:

If the U.S. hadn't drafted in WWII, do you think they would have gotten enough volunteers? By the accounts I've read, I suspect they would have. But that stands in significant contrast to Vietnam.
I have no idea to be honest.

Read Granny's next post after that where she responds to my question.

I don't need to do that. His sarcasm is well evident. I do think that military service should be mandatory.

OK. I was laughing because I thought you didn't catch the sarcasm.

I was wondering. My youngest daughter has recruiters calling quite often.
My last job, had quite a few ex military people working. The ones who worked under me were outstanding in every way. They were able to write preventative maint. documents, and kept very good records. All in all they were very good, responsible people.
On the other hand, if I was fighting in a war, I would want someone beside me I felt good about, who had volunteered to be there, not told to show up for his shots and hair cut.

Does mandatory service require mandatory time on the front lines?

have you read Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers?

military service was not mandatory, but you had to complete military service to gain the right to vote.

so they had to make military service open to all; if you had a handicap, they had to accommodate you and find a job you could do. even if you were majorly handicapped.

they were in the middle of a war so you might get picked for infantry, as the protagonist was.

Thanks for making mention of that seemingly little known fact about Veterans in the work place. Far TOO COMMON is the misconception that people who served in the military only know how to fire weapons, blow stuff up and blindly follow orders. One would be shocked to know the real leadership roles thrust on people in their early twenties (NCO's and Junior Petty Officers), providing logistical and material support in conditions that vary from hostile to boring is an overlooked skill.
