A 'day' is generally defined by the amount if time it takes the Earth to rotate. Since the Earth did not exist until God created it (by the Genesis hypothesis) does this mean that the first 'day' was infinitely long?

The Bible says a day for us is not the same as a day for God. A day for Him is as a 1000 years and a 1000 years are as a day.

Probably doesn't answer your question, but I felt that was word mentioning.

EDIT That might shed some light on why Adam and Eve didn't die the literal day they ate the apple. However, as you may know, no man has ever lived passed a 1000 years.

Methusalah came closest with 969 years.

Yes. If the first day were very long, then the Bible does not literally say that the Universe is 6000 years old. I do care about this, as I find the debate about the age of the universe interesting.

Some of my brothers and sisters believe that God was the cause of the Big Bang.

If you want to get down to the nitty gritty, this could fit into the Genesis description, but I prefer not to doubt my God's omnipotence.

Edit! Hold on, I had forgotten the wording of the first post. I stand by your firm 'No'.

By the way, Thousand, they believe that because of this verse:

Psalms (104:2) He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent

Why no?

This is probably a better example:

Isaiah (45:12) It is I who made the earth and created mankind upon it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts.

You asked, 'does this mean that the first 'day' was infinitely long?'

Well, I assure you it was and is not... as I've just had a glass of water.

Verily in the heavens and the earth are signs for those who believe. And in the creation of yourselves, and the fact that animals are scattered (through the earth), are signs for those of assured faith. And in the alternation of night and day, and that fact that God sends down sustenance from the sky, and revives therewith the earth after its death, and in the change of the winds, are signs for those who are wise
