Originally posted by SeitseYeah, it bothers me. If they like him because they like him for what he actually did, then that's fine. I like his music but I don't idolize him, they're not even my favorite band. He didn't even seem to care about what he was doing. I read that most of the songs he wrote he wrote in the car on the way to the studio to record the song. 😛
Then I guess it bothers both of us that some people blindly and stupidly idolize Cobain, as if the guy was some sort of semigod.
I remember I went to a party a couple of days after the guy died, and I made a joke about how underground the body would smell not exactly like teen spirit. Damn, a handfull of youngsters jumped on me because of my lack of respec ...[text shortened]... e going to lapidate me. A teen girl almost cried.
Idiots.

They ended at just the right time, in my opinion. Things would only be worse now had they gone on. They ended with 'You Know You're Right', and he finally got away from Courtney Love, so all is well.
Lol, nice joke. People need to just listen to the music and not get involved in anything else. Then after a while, put in a different CD (or switch if you have an iPod) and enjoy that for what it is: music
On a slightly different note, why would anyone name their kid Francis (sp) Bean? I mean, come on, how can you do that to a kid?

fame and fortune were probably the worst things to ever happen to Cobain and Nirvana. i think Kurt both wanted it and was embarrassed by it, due to the prevailing anti-commercialism of the Seattle scene at the time. I think music was all he had, really. He apparently helped other bands such as Green River and Mudhoney more or less as a roadie before forming the band that would become Nirvana, or around that time, and tried out for bass in the Melvins, and was rejected because he was too nervous to remember the songs. he certainly had a talent for melody, which made his songs more accessable than those of the aforementioned bands and their ilk, and this is partly what enabled Nirvana to break that market. i got into Nirvana becausae i couldn't get Teen Spirit out of my head, even though i didn't know the name of the song or the band (had heard it on a Sat morning video hits show and it just stuck in my head). Even today it is one of the few songs that makes me want to break something when i listen to it, an effect which 'purer' angry punk songs fail to have on me. there's no denying that he struck some kind of nerve in his generation and was largely responsible for bringing what was mainly alternative outsider music into the mainstream. at the time i felt Nirvana's presence on the charts in the early 90s was a great breath of fresh air blowing away the crass commercialism and hair metal of the 80s, and i remain grateful for that.
Originally posted by PinkFloydYou're not missing out, man. Nirvana was better, stone temple pilots were better, so was soundgarden. Hell, i liked the cardigans better than the smashing pumpkins. "love me love me, say that you love me"
never heard of Smushing Pumpkins. Sorry I cannot participate.
Originally posted by GalaxyShieldSiamese Dream is way better. Start with that.
Nevermind, In Utero and especially Unplugged were just as good as anything SP's did. That's just my opinion, and probably isn't shared by most people, but saying they couldn't write music seems a little harsh and uncalled for.
I still plan on getting Mellon Collie, though, and probably Siamese Dream at some point.

I actually agree that their 'popular' songs are pretty over-rated, especially Smells Like Teen Spirit, which I absolutely hate. But I didn't start listening to them because they are 'in' or to be rebellious or anything, I like them for their music. People who like them because other people do are idiots who should listen to something else. Probably a go ...[text shortened]... of 'Vs'.
And Soundgarden is good. Very cool stuff, Chris Cornell's best effort.
Anyone that doesn't have Nevermind, TEN, and Badmotorfinger in their CD collection probably doesn't even have London Calling, and the first album by the Ramones and The stone roses.
Originally posted by PalynkaAdore is a great album.. have to say might be their best. Also like The lost highway soundtrack.
By the way, for me Adore is one of the most underrated albums of the 90s.
It's a masterpiece and it's a shame even many SP fans dislike it because it didn't conform to what was expected from them.
Originally posted by uzlessNever really liked some of the songs off of Ten, not enough to buy the whole cd anyway. I have Nevermind, and haven't even heard of Badmotorfinger.

I plan on getting some Clash soon (I'm still working on my collection. I only have about 60 CDs, but my collection is a little less than two years old).
Originally posted by GalaxyShieldThe Clash hurts my ears...quite painful to listen to.

Whatever about Cobain (was an asshat in my opinion) Joe Strummer was a true hero spokesperson for an entire generation. His solo works are definitley work checking out. I recommend "Streetcore" By Joe strummer and the Mescaleroes. Or any of the work he did with Johnny Cash.
Originally posted by MexicoYeah, that's kind of what I've heard. A lot of their stuff is good, but it can also be not great. I wasn't aware that he did solo work, but I might check out some of what he did with Cash, sounds like an interesting mix.

I'm not sure why people say Cobain spoke for anyone. He didn't even like speaking for himself. I just enjoy their music because it sounds interesting. I'm not really interested in the other stuff (I always love a good band history, but that's because I love knowing history of all kinds. It's just stuff to know).
Originally posted by GalaxyShieldThe history of the clash is pretty amazing, there are some great stories in there. I recommend it if your looking for a good read.

Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer did a few songs together, the best is a cover of Bob Marley's "Redemption song". It's pretty awesome.
