If you look at a graph that charts the political orientation on certain brackets of income you'll probably find that:
-The lower incomes are shifting significantly to the right of the political spectrum
- The left is mostly supported by middle and upper middle incomes
- The variance of the political orientation within each bracket has increased significantly.

In reverse order:
Monumentally Marxist -- funny! Put yourself up on a pedestal, why don't you! ///
I'd agree and disagree with Starrman in the same breath.///
I'd seek to update my sociological model: break down all consumers into groups / cultures as a function of the Body Politic. Perhaps chavs would appear as a massively swollen appendix. Erm. Something like that. Maybe you could work out something based on insects in a rotten log. It's just that things don't seem so stratified anymore. Things have flattened out. The only hierarchy is determined by money. The middle classes don't seem as important or useful as they once were to the Fat Controllers. But we are and aren't individuals. Crowds are always forming and dissolving.

To start generating metaphors, you need to slap on a few labels.

Not to mention that the political 'left' and 'right' have been splintering significantly, especially since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
