As part of the work for the upcoming new board interface, an audit was conducted of the set preferences, and some stood out as unused and will therefore be retired shortly as I can't justify the effort to retain them.

Marroquin - 1 non-subscriber
Plastic - 3 non-subscribers

When these sets are removed, a suitable alternative will be assigned to each player.

edit : This process is complete.

I can change my settings if I am on very exotic choices, and if need be. (Though I assume that lots of people share my choice (Newspaper) 😉 )

The original wood set is still popular with early joiners - even though it looks terrible! (wood legacy). Upscaled 44x44 images I created in 2001.

50 folks still use it. 🤷

I've used Newspaper since I started here.

It's clear and clean.

It is common in chess books, I guess we go with what we're used to.

Many years ago, there was a website called Stan's NetChess.

I believe the wood legacy set was very similar to that site's default set.

Not drawing connections, just thought it was interesting.

newspaper and high contrast gives a clear picture/image of the game.

I use the pink board, it's calming.

Many people use Book - because it was once the default. This has been switched to Alpha, which is a superior design (IMO).

If only a few people revert back to Book, it will be dropped.

edit : "Book" is saved!

Hi there. I really dislike the new settings for pieces - but can't work out how to get back (I'm not a subscriber, which may mean I can't).
Cheers,
Meursault

@Meursault
Apologies - I worked it out! Cheers, M

When viewing the board, use the "Gear" icon/Board settings button above the Submit move button, or :

Phew. I like 'Book'...!
Happy you keep it. But I just had to re-select it as it apparently was changed by the system. And that is how I came here, for some investigation on what has happened.

(And I like Olive grove as background for the last 20 years, so keep that too please...)

@Russ -- It seems you have also removed the smiling emoji with the crooked teeth (which effect might have been resolution-dependent). Well, okay, but I liked that one. And of course, please don't reinstate it just for my sake.

I do appreciate the Emoji dropdown above the post-reply text box -- thank you for that!
