The Grob is a highly tactical game that commences with 1. g4.
It has been played by Basman, Hebden and even Tony Miles on occasion.

There has been lots of debate here about it being awful but is it really so bad for white. I played it 12 times W11 D1 L0 so it must have something going for it.

Lets have a tournament and find out.

We should also have an h4 tournament 'whilst' we're at it

Here is a game where white plays 1. h4 and 2 a4 Game 2764273

Edit: seriously 1.h4 is not a proper opening but the Grob is.

It's just as serious as bloody Alekhine's defense .. almost 😉

I rarely face Alekhines but when I do it is always a lowly rated player and I usually push him off the board. I have never found a strong player who plays it.

Here's my one and only attempt at the Grob. I quite enjoyed the game.

Many good players use the Alekhine, its not a bad or unorthodox opening at all. For example GM Lev Alburt, three-time U.S. Champion, used the Alekhine almost exclusively.

I'll let you in on a secret...

in order to get the french thematic tournament, I used the "send feedback" link at the bottom of every screen.

That said, while I love thematics and would probably play in a grob thematic, there are many other openings I would rather try out than that. Perhaps the Petrov?

There are loads of other "sound" openings but the Grob is fun!

Not long after I'd joined a chess club I was playing a few friendly games with a slightly higher rated player. In one game he opened 1.g4 grinning smugly and said, "You don't know what that is, do you?". I shrugged my shoulders, said "No, but it looks crap.", and beat him emphatically inside 20 moves.
