Others may have done it before, but at least they did not showcase so plainly that they do not give the slightest flying copulation for the referee, their opponents, or decent behaviour. It was egregious, and it should be punished egregiously.

I don't get this love for hypocrisy, especially when displayed from such a high horse.

Pathetic.

Edit: Punished eggregiously. Hahaha, I bet you defended De Jong's kung fu fighting and Van Bommel's brutality. Much better displays of...fair play.

Are you happy with the signing of Meireles (despite Hodgson)? I've read Hodgson has been playing him a lot out of position but I haven't seen those games. He doesn't seem the player to play anything else than central midfield. I saw the last game and he played well, but he was back in the middle.

I think he's a quality player. I'd prefer to see him at CM but he looks effective at ACM too.

I don't like saying it but Roy has to go.

By ACM do you mean like a Ozil/Sneijder type of player? He's not particularly technical to play there, I think. You need a refined first touch for that, as you tend to receive the ball under pressure already. He's great at transitions, though, as he doesn't hog the ball and can also do his runs in the box. If you had better wingers, I think a trio of Lucas, Meireles and Gerrard could work very well.

He's certainly better in the middle, no doubt. He's also an effective replacement for Gerrard at ACM on occasions - Cole has yet to show me that he can play that position effectively.

I prefer Gerrard where he can do the most damage (ACM) and not where he's got to be a bit more disciplined (CM), and with Meireles with Lucas in CM allows Meireles to get forward in support or ping a few of those long shots of his.

There's no way it'll happen but I wish Gerrard would let him take the corners. The WHU game was the first time I actually thought we looked dangerous from them with him taking them. We actually scored one albeit against the worst PL team I've seen in some time.

Anyway, this is a Champions League thread, so before someone points out that LFC aren't in it ... I'll leave it at that.

De Jong... ahem... not paid attention to previous threads, have you?

Hypocrisy? Yes, but not from me. It would behoove you to make a quick retraction of that accusation, and a shamefaced one, too.

The hypocrisy was about you caring more about the fact that they did not hide it properly rather than the act itself.

I've seen people get carded on purpose to wipe their slate clean from as long as I can remember. Last year Barcelona did it twice and nobody batted an eye. Is it because there was a fig leaf of pretense? It was obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes. If anything I find the pretense worse, as if the fans, the players and the refs were unable to see the blindingly obvious. Of course, Mourinho is also very guilty of this by not admitting it at the end of the game but to make such a big deal out of the cards now because they didn't fake it well enough is absolutely ridiculous.

PS: As for De Jong, I admit I jumped to conclusions there but that's not where I accused you of hypocrisy.

I don't get it either. Every top team have done it at one time or another. Why suddenly the controversy?

Also, how are they going to prove that Mourinho said: "get a red card" to his players?

I know it, you know it, the guy from the bakery down the street knows it. How much more proof do you think a commission needs? It's not a murder trial...

Once upon a time everybody knew the earth was flat. That still doesn't make it so. Anyway that's not the real issue here.

Why are they're after Real Madrid? I'm certainly not a fan of the club (apart from el classico I find the Spanish league predictable and mostly boring), but it seem that UEFA is making a special case out of this one. Is this were they draw the line? And if so why now? And will UEFA continuously strike down on teams that are "discrediting" the game?

For me it seems very weird and a typical UEFA case where public outroar "forces" them to "investigate" - kind of the Suarez hand case under the WC.

And they burned people who said differently. 😀 Seriously, do you have a shred of doubt?

I agree, though. I think the combination of Real Madrid, Ronaldo (most polarizing player in the world?) and Mourinho (most polarizing coach in the world?) was just too much for some to bear. The reaction from the commentators of the stream I was watching was telling. The guy started going on how Barcelona would never do this (they did it last year, but hey, who cares?) and how he now hoped Real Madrid didn't go on to win the Champions League.

They should all just get a grip.

Edit - Maybe UEFA is also happy to divert attention from the several cases this week where the extra officials behind the goal failed to help on several penalty calls.

I'm at the stage where I'd take anyone over him and his 35 year old tactics.
