With this sort of mentality how can we take Islam seriously?
Why should you take it less seriously because some of its followers are serious about their religion?
Do you think that Christians would not do the same? It has happened many many times in the past (persecution by Christians for blasphemy).
There are several issues:
1. Do the actions of followers of a religion reflect on the religion? If so can we do the same for Christianity based on any group of followers past or present?
2. If a religion calls for its followers to demand respect from others is it a reason to take said religion "less seriously"?
3. What does it mean to take a religion 'seriously'? Does it mean to grant its followers some respect? Does it mean to accept the possibility that its teachings are true? Does it mean to take a live and let live policy?

Both are wrong. Get rid of religion from politics and the law, whether Christian, Islam or any other.
