Why?

What is the purpose of punishment?

1. retribution, justice, payment
2. prevention (of offender offending again/for some while)
3. rehabilitation
4a. deterrence for offender
4b. deterrence to society

All of above, some or none?

the evil committed during one's life is already done, so who does it benefit to have the sinner punished for eternity? shouldn't reh ne then is simply the hurdles one willingly places in his path to a higher form of existence.
perhaps closer to justice would be that evil-doers be educated and then sent back in a cycle of rebirth. thus the soul reincarnates itself and accumulates knowledge. evil done then is simply the hurdles one willingly places in his path to a higher form of existence.

Life 1 = frog

Life 2 = Joe a person

Sending Joe to be a frog again is another being not Joe.
How is that any kind of discipline for Joe ?

Reincarnation has to mean the existence of SOMEONE ELSE or SOMETHING ELSE.

As far as I am concerned, the purpose of punishment is to show the offender
that he/she has transgressed and broken the rules of the society that they
live in. There are many ways to do this. Deprivation of liberty and luxuries
is one way. Re education is another way.

But there are those in society that will continue to offend and re offend no
matter what punishment and re education is imposed upon them.

These people are beyond rehabilitation. They have to be identified and taken out
of society and place in a controlled environment. If they are not willing to follow
the rules of polite society then they should in my opinion be deprived of the
privilege of living in that society and their lifestyle in the confined environment
should be strict.

They are after all in prison not Disney World.

Strict harsh conditions with hard labour, and unpaid labour at that.
Labour that would benefit the community that they keep on
transgressing against.

It's either that or execute them. Execution is another days work.
I don't think that I am qualified to judge whether anyone should
be executed.
