In Zambia under the previous president, the president used to go around bribing churches (quite openly) and the churches would queue up to receive bribes. Interestingly, the money which was theoretically donated to the churches was often misappropriated causing division in the given church.
My experience is that people are not nearly critical enough of both the leaders in churches and the systems. I guess it is similar to blind patriotism. It must be partly caused by a belief that any criticism of a system that you are involved in (whether church or government) also reflects badly on you as an individual.
