Imagine a man had a PhD in chocolate and had spent his entire life studying chocolate. He had travelled the world studying chocolate in all its forms and had an entire attic full of books on chocolate. He knew every possible chemical variation and make up of any type of chocolate. But was the woman's kit-kat bar really made of chocolate, or simply chocolate substitute? How does she know she's really tasted chocolate? Perhaps the man truly knows chocolate better than the woman. Some might argue that american chocolate isn't really chocolate, in comparison to say, tasty swiss milk chocolate. Perhaps she's lead a life of purchasing fake chocolate.

I'd say that experience can help you with understanding some things but is not neccesary. Hannibal Lector helped understand psychotic murderers through experience of being one, but every real detective in the world understands murderers through unpracticed study.
I have trouble deluding myself into thinking I'm loved by people that don't exist, but that is just me. If you're willing to give up everything for religion, you obviously already believe, or want to anyway, so just get on with it and delude yourself. I doubt there are many non-believers that really wish God loved them. This story seems pretty pointless as an analogy for God. I'm fine with only being loved by real people.
