Bible truth #2... "Babylon the Great"

After the flood Babel "later Babylon" was the beginning of false religion. Gen 10:8-10. Dan 5:22, 23.

The early Christians referred to Rome and the Roman empire as Babylon.
Any system that is against God is Babylon.

Chapter 17 of Revelation speaks of religious Babylon. Chapter 18 of Revelation speaks of material Babylon.

Religious Babylon I believe refers to the Roman Catholic system. But before anyone gloats that Protestantism is altogether exempt from the symbol read again.

It says that the personage riding the beast is the mother of harlots. That would indicate that she has spawned off others like her. The mother is the Roman Catholic Church. The daughters that have come out of her are the divisions of the Protestant Christianity.

Once again, the mother of harlots I believe is the Roman Catholic Church. The daughters of the mother are the denominations of Protestantism.

So much for religious Babylon in chapter 17. (Well not quite that simple as you will see). Material Babylon in chapter 18 I believe is the city of Rome. And in the whole book there is some overlap of the religious and material Babylon so that it is difficult to totally systematize the matter.

Before ending this post, God tells His people to come out of Babylon. That indicates that His people, His saints, true believers in Christ are held captive in her. So my post does not mean religious Babylon does not contain the saints of God. Quite the contrary. They are held there and are called to come forth from her.

The meaning of course would be that in the Roman Catholic Church there are many saints of God. And when I say saints I mean Christians, nothing more and nothing less.

That should be enough to get me in trouble. Comments?

Babylon is really more of a state than a place. You can leave Babylon but it will not leave you that easily.

Babylon is something in our blood it seems, not easy to get rid of. And I don't think the Jehovah's Witnesses have even gotten started.
