I suggest smilies go into XML tags like this:
< smilie >: )< /smilie >
In this case without the spaces, of course. 🙂

It replaces only the ) for some reason and anyway " ) isn't the code of any of the smilies.

In this case without the spaces, of course. 🙂 As much as I like the idea, there's a reason you can't do this for instance: < i >italics< /i >. To be concise with the codes for italic and bold, I think brackets could solve the problem, like: [s]🙂[/s], or something.
Edit: Four edits to get the italic tags printed in the post, because the script strips out any tags. Probably for security reasons or you could insert script tags and the like.

Why not have a tag like [exactly] :-) (-: [/exactly]
Even [ b ] or other typo instructions can be as is.
