    I like both ideas, having the ladder and one challenge per person at one time.

    It would be slow and congested at first, but then, what isn't.

    Oh, it shouldn't be automatic, like there'd be 1000 people at the bottom who have no interest in the ladder idea, everybody would just enter it if they want to, obviously.

    Ladders work well on the site "itsyourturn".
    Each person can challenge 2 people and be challenged by 2 people.
    There about 10 ladders in chess with times varying from 28 hours a move to 100 hours per move. With automatic lose on time.
    You soon reach a stage where you are playing people of your own strength and you can assess your progress by another means other than your grade.

    Please let's have LADDERS soon on this site.

    Redhot pawn beats them all for variety of Tournaments, Clans, Seiges etc.

    I like Seiges. And I am sure I would like ladders as well.

    Why not allow for a couple of challenges not just one, 2 would be nice a black and white.

    On the site "itsyourturn" it allows you to challenge 2 and be challenged by 2 that is two games as white and 2 as black.

    Ok, how many ladders and with what time constraints? For starters, I'll suggest we match the clan leagues :

    - 1 Day Timeout / 14 timebank
    - 3 Day Timeout / 7 timebank
    - 7 Day Timeout / 14 timebank
    - 14 Day Timeout / 21 timebank

    And an additional long haul :

    - 21 Day Timeout / 21 timebank

    I'll post about rules as I decide, but I'll probably go with the two game approach. Its all up for consultation anyway until this goes live, so feel free to post your suggestions.

    i have only one question about this, especially in the longer time controls some games might move a lot faster than others... lets say 8 challenges 7 and 7 wins. in the time that 7 is waiting for 6 to finish his/her match with 5, 9 has challenged 8 and beaten him/her, now the newly crowned 8 wants to challenge 7. it isn't fair that 7 has been challenged from below twice before getting the opportunity to challenge above. are you going to put some sort of lock in place that prevents this?

    I suggest the starting point should be an ordinary tournament
    With say 64 players
    the ladder would then be sorted by the amount of points scored in that tournament with ties being sorted by TER

    so 126 games each just to join a ladder?

    we already have ratings to create the first order of the ladder why create more hassle?

    I'm not decided on how to prime the ladder just yet, but I'll probably take entrants for a few days for each ladder, arrange entrants by site rating, then the ladder will open for challenges and all newcomers will start at the bottom.
