To their surprise, they found that by exposing this type of superconductor to a stronger and stronger external magnetic field, first it destroyed its conductivity (as expected) BUT then much of its conductivity suddenly returned! (which wasn't expected) albeit with some electrical resistance because it behaved like an ordinary conductor, like an ordinary metal, rather than a superconductor when exposed to such high magnetic fields.
They interpreted this result as being "...circumstantial evidence that the stripe-ordered arrangement of charges and magnetism is good for forming the charge-carrier pairs required for superconductivity to emerge". They need every tiny clue they can grab hold of.
