That figure of 2.2 million deaths does not require a sophisticated model. If 2/3 of the population need to be infected for herd immunity and the virus has a 1% Infection Fatality Rate then, in the US, 2.2 million people will die. It's that simple. The models said what was necessary to avoid that outcome.
