I've always believed the stories of elephants sniffing out fermenting fruit and travelling miles for a 'good night out'. I'm devastated to be told that this is a myth. Or is it?

I don't know about elephants but moose do get drunk on fallen and fermented fruit (usually apples), and a couple of years ago there was a moose vigorously defending his tree.

an oldish book about wild plants in California said that highway 101 somewhere between San Francisco and San Jose used to be lined with pyracanthus trees, but birds would gorge themselves on the fermented fruit (small, bright orange-red berries), get drunk, and cause accidents on the highway, so the bushes were removed.
