Three switches outside a windowless room are connected to 3 light bulbs inside the room. How can you determine which switch is connected to which bulb if you are only allowed to enter the room once?

Open the door and leave it open. Then mess around with the switches, checking which one lights which bulb by looking through the doorway at appropriate times without actually entering the room again.

1 edit

1.label switches 1,2,3
2. turn on switches 1 and 2
3. enter the room
4. the unlit bulb is controlled by switch 3
5. unscrew one of the lighted bulbs
6. leave room but leave door open
7. turn off switch 2
8. if room is still lit, switch 2 controls the unscrewed bulb.
9. if room becomes dark, switch 1 controls the unscrewed bulb.

Turn on switch 1.
Leave it on for 5/10 mins.
Turn off switch 1.
Turn on switch 2.
Go into the room.
The lit bulb is connected to switch 2.
The unlit and cold bulb is connected to switch 3.
The unlit and warm bulb is connected to switch 1.

A windowless room? Oh, thank goodness! This means that if any blind men should be stationed in the room, they can't describe imaginary scenes outside the window. 🙄

Nope, they are daughters by birth.

good answers, and none of them are wrong. My answer was the same as Timmo's - either that or enter the room, remove the light bulbs, replace them with a rabbit, a rat and a skunk. Exit the room and listen to the different noises you get when each switch is thrown. You would smell the skunk.
