The four edits had nothing to do with the content of the puzzle. They were because of a formatting problem I kept experiencing when constructing the "arrows". I was using the ">" symbol and its brother for the arrowheads, and apparently using the latter causes all of the text following it to be lopped off. It took me three edits to figure out what was causing it, and a fourth to correct the problem.

The text has always stated that they couldn't remove thier own hats, as XanthosNZ pointed out.
