In the rulebook, it shows that both players must make alternating moves. So my challenge is to create a position in which the player who has the move MUST make a move that leads to checkmate. I believe this is only possible for mates in 1, but I may be wrong. Here's an example (White to move):

Maybe I'm not seeing what you are saying, but white has only 1 legal move, and that move happens to be checkmate. The King cannot move anywhere. The pawn above the king (h7) cannot move, and the pawn beside the king (g6) can only checkmate the black king.

I'll work on that. Meanwhile, how about a position in which there's only one move that doesn't lead to mate?

What I'm saying is to create a position in which the only legal move(s) lead to checkmate. Therefore, a player MUST checkmate the other player in a position.

Here's one I just made where Black is forced to mate in two:

Black

White

EDIT: This one's flawed; still working.

I've seen an example where White has no choice but to give mate in six (!) moves. I can't remember the exact position, but it's something like this:

Here we go:

White to move, and White must mate within 4

Even better:

White to move and must mate in four moves:

I looked to increase the number of pathways. White to play MUST mate in either 1 or 2, and there are five different mates:

sorry. I posted something then I saw you were defining it differently then I was looking to see how i could fulfill the boundaries you gave and I was about to suggest another move when I saw that It was wrong.

I'll admit i'm crappy on these sorts of puzzles...

maybe I should stay out of these.

No, if you're crappy at them, then you have to do them even more, to gain some skill. Solving puzzles develops your tactical vision, thus helps you on your playing.
