I heard that the smallest possible division of time was the New York second, defined as the time elapsed between the traffic lights changing to green and the taxi driver behind you honking his horn. Perhaps the thing faster than light is his hand as it moves towards the horn.

I think I know. It's dark, because wherever light turns up there's darkness already there.

It's from a Terry Pratchet novel, where he phrased it more amusingly than I did. I thought you might have got it from there.

His novels are set in an alternative universe and on a world which is flat and carried around on the backs of four elephants which are in turn standing on a turtle, so I don't think logic applies.

I know, I know!

The eye lid of course!

Why? Because I have so many photos of myself blinking at the exact moment the flash is coming. My eyes see the flash before it has come and blink just in time when the flash arrives and the photo is taken with my eye lids down protecting the eyes against the blinding flash. Hense so many photos is taken me blinking in the picture.

Makes sense, doesn't it?

So what is the turtle standing, or swimming on? And what do the elephants eat? Do they stop to deficate? Do they ever get it on?
What happens if they have baby elephants? Do the old ones retire and new ones take over? Does the trunk of the elephant ever go up and over and whack the world? It might be construed as a tornado.
