I knew that qh2g1 was mate and had been intending to play it for hours but when I made the move I unaccountably played qh2g2

Ok, it was bad, but you shouldn't have resigned. Maybe taken a break from that game and come back to it later or another day.
After Kxg2, you could play Ne3+.
Then:
dxe3 Rxd1
Rxd1 Bxe3
and you're a knight down but with four extra pawns. Would've been an interesting game from there.

I don't like resigning games early because I always feel ...[text shortened]... right really - it was still playable, I could have won his Queen, and I should have carried on.
