yeah, i was looking at that.. white isnt really in a "force tactic or die" position.. im guessing it has something to do with a bishop sac, if not that a kight one.. but if i didnt know there was a tactic present(like a real game) i might just play it safe..

Why play it safe? You have an extra queen don't you?

This problem has no real solution, I suppose - probably all moves win. Black's position is a total mess. Bxh7+ doesn't work, but will lead to a win, just like about every other move.

I think black is dead meat after any move, but even more dead meat after 1. Ng5.

I wonder what the intended sequence is.

Bxh7 does work. 🙂

EDIT: I can put a queen somewhere on the board and white would still win. 🙂 even though black would be up a rook.

1. Bxh7+ Kxh7
2. Ng5+ Kg8
3. Qh5 Re8
4. Qxf7+ Kh8
5. Qh5+ Kg8
6. Qh7+ Kf8
7. Qh8+ Ke7
8. Qxg7+ Kf6

forces the black king into the center of the board.

I must be missing something.

with Kg8 I would expect this line

1. Bxh7+ Kxh7 2. Ng5+ Kg8 3. Qh5 Rd8 4. Qxf7+ Kh8 5. Rh1 e5 6. Kg1 Bh3 7. Ne6
Rd7 8. Be7 Nxe7 9. Rxh3# *

and so Kg8 isn't blacks best reply to Ng5 check.

Maybe I'm missing something but if it was to be Kg8...

1. Bxh7+ Kxh7
2. Ng5+ Kg8
3. Qh5 Rd8
4. Qh7+ Kf8
5. Qh8# ?

I don't see anything wonderful myself, but I reckon I'd play Bxh7+ and then enjoy attacking the king in the area outside his castle wall. The dark squared bishop is very usefully placed. How about

1. Bxh7+ Kxh7
2. Ng5+ Kh6
But after that each time I think I see something it's refuted a few seconds later. I'm learning not to post too quickly 🙂 (The edits were for formatting.)

Qh8 isn't mate 🙂 the king can go to e7. If I were to put a queen on the board for black would you still play Bxh7+ and if so give the "winning" line if you think you can...this really doesn't go to forced mate but it goes to a position so dominant for white that you could put the queen back on the board black so being a rook down for white and white would still win.

Fritz 9 says Ng5, Qd2, Qe2, and even Qc1 are all +11 points or higher for White. Bxh7+ is 10 or so points. This confirms what the other posters have been telling you all along: this is a lame problem.

And please show the win White has if I add bQb8.

White to move.
