Which is it?
Saying 1300-1400 sounds much more persuasive than 1600-1625, doesn't it?

Exactly...

Yeah, I'm tired of defending myself against patzers on this forum (I do it about once a week now...) so I'm going to go do something else.

I would be happy to reach that level without databases.

Pretty easy...you can get there on tactics along.

its totally possible. you will use much more time than your oppenents, but you will be learning different ideas, and thus improving. whereas your database of an oppenent will get fat and lazy and start to lose many games.

It's either use them, or be stuck at 1300-1400, because virtually everyone at MY level (notice I'm not a 1200 like you) uses them, so if I don't I'll have a distinct disadvantage.
Wow, I honestly didn't know that. Maybe I should start using databases too, then.

100 patzers acting like they understand chess doesn't mean anything.

I stand in the place where I am.

Anyhow, like I said, without DBs I'd be 1600-1625 - a definite drop.

I dont claim to understand chess... far from it actually. I've been playing for about a year and a half and rated around 1420 OTB. I am happy to be where I am right now. I can only hope to improve over time.

I didn't post with that intention. I just didn't know databases were allowed here; I'll definitely start using them now. 🙂

That's what I thought, they really do help as you get a higher rating. I use them more and more often - I don't use them all the time because I'm sometimes too lazy to open up a DB, but I should.

Everybody has their opinions about databases. I prefer to play my own moves. If I lose, I lose. Thats how I will learn.

Maybe once I understand the "why" behind the moves, it may be a different story. Now, alot of database moves make no sense to me.

I guess I am a patzer.
