White (Aronian) resigned here in the recent European Championship.:

How can he save the game?

Also a Christmas Card for you to send to your RHP buddy.
and a couple of opening traps with the usual RHP victims.

I would try 1 a4 Bxa4 2 K x c4 and then try to keep the king away from that white can directly or indirectly protect his last pawn since the pawn by the black kind is history.

Hi sonhouse,

Black does have the wrong Bishop for the Rook's Pawn.

Looks lime you join me in the doghouse.

Wow, he just lets white take the B. That was seeing a lot of moves ahead!

So he had to dig 17 moves in to see the win!

Not really.

You can tell at a glance this ending is a win.

I added the moves to clear any doubt.
But first you must see the idea. I honestly thought it either a win on time or the
score was wrong (which is not uncommon at chessgames where I saw the game -
I and others are often correcting game scores.)

But both players must have seen the Bishop sac idea quite a few moves before
it arose on the board. It's a great piece of chess.

The live commentators on the game also missed the idea and they too thought it was a draw.
