I've been thread-digging and I can't seem to find it, but someone on here mentioned Yusupov's book the Petroff Defense.

The beginning of this year I decided to play 1..e5 and I got sick of studying 45 moves of Marshall theory, only to get to use it in maybe 3 out of 50 games against the Ruy.

Anyway I ordered a copy of the book from Amazon and it was $34 bucks, which isn't cheap, but also not bad for an apparently out-of-print book with 434 pages of analysis.

The book arrived to day, and I opened it and I was amazed to find the following inscribed on the first page:

With best wishes from Artur Yusupov, Cherry Hill, 27.07.01

Thank you whoever mentioned the book.

You've made my day.

From the Forums link...Search Forums...Search Content... I pasted in: "Yusupov's book the Petroff Defense" and got 5 hits. Is this what you were looking for? Thread 118806

I don't think that's it Monty, I think that thread mentions Yusupov as well as the Petroff, but not the book itself. Live by the search algo die by the search algo.

Anyway, whoever posted it made my day.

Humor doesn't translate cross-country very well.

My Russian friends loved this joke. The translation is roughly:

-A young girl sneaks out of her house and goes drinking with her friends.

Her parents catch her as she tries to sneak back into the house and ask her where she's been.

She replies, "*Hiccup* I've been eating ice cream!"-

Everyone in Ulyanovsk loved that stupid joke and it just enraged me when thought I didn't think it was funny because I didn't understand it. The then attempted to explain in detail that it was super-funny because the girl obviously was lying to her parents and that she hiccuped before she lied. I can't describe to you how my rage was compounded by the inherent humorlessness of the joke coupled with the fact that if somehow it was explained to me in great detail that I would find it funny.

I didn't.

But generally the linguistic tag "jk" indicates that the poster is "just kidding."

True, humor doesn't translate well. And joking on the net doesn't make it easier.

At least the arthur thing gave me a smile, just wasn't sure he meant it as I didn't pick up on the jk tag.

That Russian joke only made me frown. Not funny at all.
Perhaps in Russia hiccups are funny?

I am not too sure, but I'd bet what killed the joke is the word drinking. There is no tie directly IMO for drinking and ice cream. BUT...
Here's my version

A girl was out with her boyfriend drinking and making out.
Her parents catch her as she tries to sneak back into the house and ask her where she's been.

She replies, "*Hiccup* I've been eating ice cream!"-
