I found a fantastic web blog that has articles about Soviet chess and chess sets. Interesting to learn what went on behind the Iron Curtain.

Totally beautiful chess set. My favourite: Latvian Chess set, and the 1980 Olympiad (on plastic)

My favorite is the Latvian set, also. I have it from Chess Bazaar in boxwood/crimson, probably the last set ever sold by them in this color scheme, as they had massive problems in producing these. (CB doesn't make them, but has some art studio make them for them, apparently a contractor maker for CB, and CB seems to be the web commerce front end only, with no production facilities themselves) They don't even sell Latvian sets themselves anymore in any color scheme. This one is for keeps.
