Hi, all!

I have a question about the French Defense. While I know the expected second more for White is 2. d4, I have a question about 2. Nf3.

As Black, if I reply with 2... c5, is there a chance I will transpose into a Sicilian line?

The reason I ask is I am participating in an open tournament this weekend, and I know for a fact that almost all of the players are well-versed in Sicilian opening lines, whereas I would like to steer clear of ANY of that.

In that case, would I be safer replying with 2... d5 instead?

What do you think? I appreciate any advice!!

Thanks, all... 😀

1) Yes, if you play 2... c5 after 1.e4 e6 2. nf3 you are in a Sicilian as 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 is the likely follow up.

2) If you play 2. d5 you are in a French. If 3. e5 c5 then be aware of the French wing gambit 4. b4

3) In general unless your opponents are Masters don't fear their opening prep at some point in the game they will be on their own and you can beat them there.

Nc6 and Bc5 are great responses for French players to the proposed line (comfort-wise).

It's hard not to like the statistics for Black after 1. e4 e6 2. Nf3 d5 :

Good luck at the tourney!
