I was wondering if anyone in here would know of a way to place pieces on a vertial board and keep them for use while playing with someone using grid references? For example to replace an actual board at home that one might use to give a visual reference to the game being played.

I hope this is not a question too tedious for you to answer, I have had a look around, but I haven't found anything I can use. There is no doubt somewhere obvious that I haven't looked.........

Isn't there something I can keep on the computer? A programme somewhere on line I can down load?? Don't chess players use something to hold the pieces when they're playing with grid refernces??

Fridge magnets don't have to go on fridges, you could improvise something metal; to put them on and make it razor sharp to reduce incidences of childrens fidgeting fingers.

Get the lad you are going to play to join here and it will keep the game for you.
Then buy one of these plasma screens and scew that onto the wall.
Keep logged onto RHP and there you have it.

Failing that then paint a large chessboard on your kitchen wall.
Screw coat hooks into each square - you will need 64.

Then paint chess pieces on 32 pieces of wood.
Drill a hole into the top of the wood to hang onto the coat hooks.
(you might want to do an extra Queen of each colour to cover promotions
when you have two Queens on the board.)

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure exactly what you want, but here's a guess:

http://hgm.nubati.net/WinBoard-4.6.2.exe

Install, Run, and select "Just view or edit game files" as the option.
