But wasn't white losing his knight before Ne6 because of the back rank mate threat ? The best option I see: white goes the knight down for a pawn with Be3, but now the freed rook prevents mate. Am I missing something?

Hartmch vs Pawntorook4 Game 3573715

BTW, I got black twice in a row, is this 'standard', or just luck of the draw? Do I get white twice in a row now?

16.Qh3+ Kb8 17.Bf4+ Ka8 18.NxB would have saved your knight

Another option: Queen takes the pawn of c4 (Qxc4)..

actually now that I look at it, 18.KxN black is in big trouble after 19.Qf3+, as
19..Kc8 black loses his queen to 20.Qa8+ Kd7 21 Rd1+, while after 19..Kc8 black is in real danger after being mated...ie 20.Rd1 Qe7? 21.Qa8 Qe2? 22.Qc8+ Ka5 23.Rd5+ Ka4 24.Qc6+ with mate next move.....but don't worry, I have missed worse

restless soul- I must say your solution to the knight threat is "more forcing" than mine...! 😀

Game 3573715

Over. Once again, I did not see a way out, a better opponent with more material. I am all for fighting it out, but I am also a realist.
