My chess mat keeps folding up!

Hi all. I just bought a chess mat (today) but when I set the pieces up, they keep falling over cos the mat folds up. What do I do? Should I iron it?
And when I'm storing it should I fold it up?

What is it made of? I just roll mine with the board side of the mat on the outside when it is rolled up. Mine is just vinyl with some threadlike mesh in it. Ironing may damage it.

Get some really heavy chess pieces🙄

Plan A - four large nails

Plan B - glue mat to piece of wood cut to size

Plan C - roll with it

Try a better grade mat, I've seen cheap ones that never unkrinkle and make the pieces tilt all over the board, a good one is soft and pliant and doesn't do that.

With mine I had to iron it. Put a towel over it first... then iron it 🙂

Plan D: Paint a chessboard on your coffee table.

Plan E: Take it to your local Fish & Chip shop and get them to fry it.

When I don't use my chess mat, I put it under my rug. Then it will stay uncurled when I use it.

I don't know if this is posted already or not.

Roll it up really tight and keep it that way for a while. You can roll on the opposite side too (too get out wrinkles).

Also try to flatten it out as best you can. Lay it on a table flat and stack books on it. Again try to do it tight and not let any wrinkles in. You can either just use four books on the four corners or cover the entire thing. Let them sit a while, and it will begin to unwrinkle.

Some sellers have the option of shipping the board to you in a tube. If they have that option, next time go with it. Keep the tube for permanent storage.

My first roll up board came with a little ring instead. You can make one out of paper. Just tape a little ring of paper in a circle. Slide it down to the middle of the board after you have rolled it and use it for storage.

This works for the standard tournament vinyl board. I hope it works for you.

Thanks but Paul, when u bring it out of storage, u have to go thru the process of straightening it again.
