Out of interest, does anyone (mods etc) keep any stats on significant rating difference victories, eg a player with a low rating beating someone with a particular high one?

Not gloating, but I seem to have hovered around the mid-1300s for a while now, but just got checkmate against someone with a high-1900 rating. Might be insignificant in the great scheme of things and I appreciate not everyone's into ratings, but it's a bit of a milestone for lowly old me.

We're going to need Griffiths' goals this season, although the bookies have us favourites to make a swift return to the Chump. Did well per-season.

Thanks for the game comments - had a few close calls against some high-rating opponents recently, but this one topped it. I guess it's what makes chess the game it is......!

Here's a real life game in which someone with an ECF grade of 58 (about 1100 FIDE) beat someone with an ECF grade of 125 (about FIDE 1650):

What makes it remarkable, however, is that the loser of this game plays on a well known online chess site where his rating is in excess of 2450! (my rating on the same site is about 300 points lower).

I'm not doubting you didn't play well in the game but cynically I would say the supposed 1900 player you beat is not actually 1900!! or perhaps they are wanting to drop their rating for tournament entry as many seem to do, sandbaggers as they are known.

You can't sandbag very much as your tournament rating never goes 100 below your highest rating.

As a high 1800-low 1900 rating player here, I can attest that lots of mistakes are still made at this level, at least by me. Especially when playing an opening that one is unfamiliar with.

This takes some beating: OTB nearly 30 years ago a friend of mine played a mega sharp Najdorf, got a good ending and finally ground down a player 785 points higher. (victim was Owen Hindle if anyone remembers him)

My biggest ratings gap win was when I was 1559 vs a player rated 1908, at the time.

A couple sacrifices, some well placed bishops and naked aggression was just enough to win the day.

That was a year ago. Hope I can recapture some of that past glory one of these days.
