I can see the day when Rybka 23.9 will announce to the world
that after leaving their mainframe on for 1 month there is no
'best first move' for White. Everything he does losses.

White is in zugzwang.

yeah i remember thinking as i was typing that that it wasn't something i could prove. I just remember hearing in club one day that 1. d4 is apparently slightly favored for aforementioned reasons. Engines are indeed better at positions arising from open games after 1. e4, but anyway, it's a moot point.

What can you learn from 9 moves?

Well it's not the London Bishop that gives the mate, it's the other one.
The Brighton Bishop. But the two work together well.

Black was too stubborn with his London Bishop and failed to swap it.

nice fool's mate!
here's another mate i just had as black in a french double exchange with 2 isolated queens pawns. it was a really open position, and my 1800 opponent made things easy by weakening his king's position and by allowing my knight to sit untouched on d4 while wasting tempo on a meaningless check. (letting me have the h-pawn didn't hurt, but it didn't really help that i was up a pawn, it was more help that it was a pawn from in front of his king)

That will be a nice exercise to then proof this assertion with the theory of sister squares 😀

Hey GP, who gets credit for the "Brighton Bishop" term- is that your own creation? I like it, and I am going to use it!

As an aside, I'm just glad Hans Kmoch never got to it, as "leucobishop" and "melanbishop" would be a bit over the top!

I made it up on the spot. (the same way I play my games)

I was showing it to Keith last night in Bells. He likes it too.

Have to sneak it onto the The Corner and copyright it.
