A good reason never ever to play e5 if white is foolish enough to play 1. e4. There are much better replies available to black. Another thing, never play c5 if the person playing 1. e4 is Dragon Fire. He will suggest you need a cup of tea and then give you a bunch of pawns in return for your soul.

heres the thing, i really like the caro, but i felt i needed more of an initiative pushing opening even from the black side. so i starting playing with the latvian gambit. . anyway, im worried that i now have to face the KG, is there any hope?

9 times out of 10 that proves to be a big waste of time - eg
1.e4 e5 2.f4 Qh4+ 3.g3 Qe7 4.d3 exf4 5.Bxf4
or
1.e4 e5 2.f4 Qh4+ 3.g3 Qf6 4.fxe5 Qxe5 5.Nc3 Bb4 6.Nf3 Qe7
Both giving White a very solid plus.

My first ever tournament game. Round 1 Sennelager 1972

I got the trap idea from The Chess Companion by Chernev.

Then I met a strong player who advised me 2.f4 was unsound.

I never played the King's Gambit again.
45 otb Latvians yes - King's Gambits: P.1 W.1

The Kings Gambit has never been a main weapon in any World Champs armoury.

See Lasker to Kramnik.

What right do you have to expose your King like that on your 2nd move
when there is a perfectly good move (2.Nf3) in the position.

Any good player who is willing to answer 1.e4 with 1...e5 will have
a line against the King's Gambit.

Faced it quite a few times. 2...d5
It's Black who sacs for the attack.

And if your nice I might just show you my Black brilliancy that was published
all over the world from Moscow to Montreal, from Brisbane to Bristol.

This came from a Falkbeer (2...d5).

Your jaws will drop,
Your shoulders will sag.

Some of you will pinch yourself and think you are dreaming.

What a game.

The ghost of Frank Marshall appeared and covered my
board with the very gold coins he picked up from his Qg3 game.

They stopped the clocks in the tournament to applaud me
as my opponent wept with joy at being mated in such a beautiful way.

One day all the greatest games of chess will appear on a CD.

(Not some knocked up quick-make-a-buck database full of cute girly type wins).

Proper games - sharp, in your face, dare devil over the top games.

This game will be the first on the CD.

Just had a thought - If I show it, Russ will remove it.

Because once you wood pushers see this, you will realise you could
never obtain such heights. You will cancel your subs and give up chess.

I don't want that to happen - you will have to wait until the CD comes out.

Here is that game I mentioned earlier in this thread.

I went sac - happy. It's not 100% sound White has better
moves but what he played looked good enough Over The Board.

He ran his King up the h-file avoiding a perpetual thinking he would be
safe.

He missed the Queen Sac.

It was published in The Scotsman...which is read in Moscow...

It's quite a cute game indeed. That King marched straight into his grave.

1.e4 e5 2.f4 Qh4+ 3.g3 Qe7 4.d3 exf4 5.Bxf4 and now 5...d5 6.Nc3 Nf6, and what is the "very solid plus" White has? Because in the large databases (e.g., chessbase.com, 365chess.com), statistically, it looks about even in terms of game results.

Mind you, I'm not saying this is a great opening for Black. Any opening where Black moves his queen very early, twice, while blocking his king's bishop after the second queen move while allowing White to develop, is suspect. But I'm not sure that the line you suggest is a refutation.

And it so happens that I am interested in this reply to the King's Gambit. Because if it could be relied upon to be playable, it would certainly cut down on the amount of theory necessary for Black to learn. So, I'd like to see the best counter-lines by White. 4.Nc3 exf4 5.Qf3 looks very good for White except in the context of 5...c6, when it seems to lose its advantage. 4.Nc3 exf4 5.d3 fxg3 6.hxg3 c6 looks stronger for White, as does 4.Nc3 exd4 5.d4 fxg3 6.hxg3 d5 7.Bf4 c6, but I'm not sure.
