Note this is not a cheating accusation of the player known as "MaryAnn" who was kicked out of RHP. Its just that

GNUChess decided to play a similar move to the one "MaryAnn" played in a precarious position at move 34 with black. Both me

and GNUChess had 15 minutes to make 40 moves and although I was seriously out of time I smelled mate.

This is the relevant position later on I noticed that black could have tried 36 ..Kg8 seeing I was seriously out of time. Perhaps chess software can be adapted to detect when their opponents are in time trouble and to play for time just like human opponents. Perhaps one of the reasons playing humans is more fun than playing software is the humaniblity aspect.

I think that once they've been banned for cheating you are allowed to call them a cheat.

If someone plays exactly like Fritz 8 then the chances are, they ARE Fritz 8

"Smart" cheats are 100x harder to catch - because they are not going to be stupid enough to win everygame, with the same engine.

couldn't they just use various engines?

...if they were clever.....

moves 12-16 ruffian
"" 16-24 Fritz 9
"" 24-27 Fruit
27-31 spike
31-40 Crafty

etc.

A method like this would be harder to "catch out" but of course such methods are never fullproof - and are probably not optimal, doing this would mean the next engine on the list has to work out the prevoius ones plan...

And even doing this you could still be caught out - computers make mistakes, and sometimes these mistakes can be blindingly obvoius to human players.

imo, anyone desperate enough to use an engine to help them impress people on an online chess server should get therapy.

If someone plays a move or moves that only computers do in that situation. The honourable thing to do would be to resign but computers just make a silly move like sacing the queen for instance.

In some instances very highly rated people on correspondence chess sites have been known to call knights "a horsie" or decline attempts to discuss the game after they have won. This means that the person is probably a complete patzer but uses a chess engine to win unfairly - explaining the lack of chess knowledge.

a horsie? Even my 2 year old cousin calls in a knight.

Now I feel bad that nobody wants to discuss any games with me *sobs*

Who says that only engines wont resign? How many games between people of

Yes but does your 2 year old cousin have a 2200+ rating on RHP and cannot take part in a sensible discussion of chess?

The reason compters play like that is called the horizon effect.Which you can search on your favourite search engine to discover more on.

But maybe some players just don't want or have not time to discuss a finished game. I think in correspondence chess ussualy you can't be 100% sure that a player is a cheater.

correspondance chess gives you days to decide on a move. That's days to consult chess books or historic games for aid on your move. I know for a fact that I am a better cc player than blitz player as I do take the time to analyze each move (using historic games for similar positions) and find the best one, I simply can't do that in blitz or otb.
