Philidor's Defense is reached by the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6. It seems to be a great defence... it cramps black but gives a solid defence which is defendable into the endgame... what is whites best bet to breach this defence?

Some of the ideas are similar except the knight is on d4. So you have Nd4, Bc4, 0-0, Nc3 etc...

You can even try to turn it into a gambit with 3.d4 exd4 4.c3 dxc3 5.Nxc3 if your opponent obligizes.

Philidor's defense fell out of favor 200 years ago. Nimzowvich, Alekhine, and Tartakower used it occasionally in the early 1900's, but nobody much plays it anymore among the big boys.

Is it a good move for black to pin the Kings knight with Bg4?

I think that the Carro-kann is popular these days... I am starting to learn it... but there are alot of traps to watch out for.

Not really, d4 for White and if ...BxN White gets the two bishops for nothing.

All the moves are very logical. I like the move which prevents black for trade of the queens. Very nice. See this site. It's great and explains the moves very nicely. It's sort of guess the move.

I love the Philidor, and I play it almost exclusively. One piece of advice though, I only occassionally see 3. d4 (the "correct" move). Instead, far more common, is 3. Bc4. I struggled with this "incorrect" move because very few chess opening books (even ones dedicated to the Philidor!) spend much time on it.

If you play the Philidor, get ready for 3. Bc4.
