yeah... that's quite a movie, I haven't mentioned because I'm not sure "chess movie" is the best way to define. But it's definatelly a great movie

well... it's fun... it's ok... but maybe too cliche. I mean, it has that old structure: the misunderstood talented kid that faces some obstacles but overcomes it in the end.

yes, but dont you think that young Josh showed a remarkable degree of decency, he was not prepared to let those in the park be termed patzers, it was not all about crushing ones opponent etc etc, there was a humanity about it that was quite appealing, anyhow, there was speculation of a new Fischer movie, two in fact, but one is to be missed, i don't know what happened to the other one.

Game Over: Kasparov vs the Machine is decent. Next year I believe a movie based on Michael Weinreb's The Kings of New York will be released

You might try "The Luzhin Defence (2000) "("The Defense"😉 book by Nabokov was made into a movie nine years ago or so. Stars J. Turturro and E. Warson.

C. Lambert in "Knight Moves" 1992 or some thing like that-spoilt, narcissistic chess champion that...will let you discover the rest.

Lastly a foreign entry of madness and chess-need to look up name. Danish film I believe.

There are a number of chess motifs in films G. Hackman as a detective(?) who ponders over a famous problem throughout the film...etc. "Night Moves" 1975.

64 Squares (2007) an unfinished game between a dead man and a live man, huh.

La diagonale du fou (1984) "Dangerous Moves" U.S.A. An odd film.

There is also a thriller movie I have been thinking about lately, I saw it when I was, I don't know exactly, about eight years old or so. It's about a chess GM and his daughter who are being threatened by some maniac who murders on coordinates on the city map, that are related to chess squares involved in his opening preparation(??).

And the chess geek turns out to be the maniac.
Does anybody here know its name??

heinzkat:

I believe the work is by J.G. Ballard the title of which escapes me at the moment but it concerns a chess game played out over a city map.

There is an Indian film 'The Chess Players.' with sub titles.
Which I recall seeing years ago.

I'm afriad I did not like The 7th Seal - far to dreary.

Chess Fever. A silent movie is good. Capablanca is in it, although he
did not know he was taking part in a movie. The director asked to
film him opening a door to let this lady into a taxi and because she
was pretty he agreed.

if you google 'chess fever + youtube'

You can see Chess Fever in two parts.

Some classic TV series have used chess. Columbo, The High Chapperal;

"..I was taught chess by a little guy from New Orleans...."

and Misson Impossible.

The latter's use of chess was terrible - I featured it on a Corner.
