Carlsen will NOT be playing.

Only Chess

Sure but it hurts the integrity of the WC.
The integrity of the WC... oh, please! It's been bought and sold, been the political toy of the Soviets, been held to ransom by Capablanca, been squabbled over by Kasparov and Kramnik never mind Khalifman and Kasimdzhanov, and wouldn't even have existed had not Steinitz been a cocksure fop. Carlsen choosing not to hold it sacrosanct is hardly a significant knock upon its reputation.

Liar!!

I can understand posters' criticism of Carlsen, even though I don't feel the same way.

What I find hard to understand is why no one in this thread has criticized FIDE. It seems to me that the present situation could have been avoided if the terms for competing in a world championship cycle had included something like "A reigning world champion who resigns the title before the upcoming match to defend that title has started will be ineligible to play in FIDE rated events for one year from the date that FIDE receives the player's resignation."

I'm not advocating such a clause. I'm merely pointing out that FIDE failed to create a disincentive to what Carlsen has opted to do.

Fide should ban his ass.

@ogb Or he could just win the money and donate it all to charity. Ukranian orphans?

@Shallow-Blue Not exactly the same thing as Carlsen is doing now, as Botvinnik was a great deal older than 31.

Hi David,

'What I find hard to understand is why no one in this thread has criticized FIDE. '

The title every two years generated a lot of money and they get a cut of it.
(20% of the prize fund has been quoted elsewhere. so it is a gravy train.
They will claim they are putting back into grass roots chess. and can point to the
latest Olympiad (a record entry despite the boycotts.)

I've no idea if they intend changing it back to three years but this match
every two years played a big part in the decision not to defend the title.

I imagine Magnus will try to reclaim the title later which is lame.
maybe Magnus needs a wife ! 😀 maybe it's time for him to grow up and take things more seriously.......he is a fool to turn his back on the prize money....

Grow up? He's already grown up beyond your level of believing that money is important once you have enough to last you for the rest of your life. He has decided that he wants to do what he enjoys doing, not what hoi polloi want him to, which is a very grown-up position to take.

@Shallow-Blue
good luck living on only $8 million for the next 50 years...which puts Magnus in his 80's. ..unless he wants to live in a mud hut... Shallow..go to any financial planning website to verify what I'm saying...

@Beowulf
no-one has yet mentioned that Botvinnik had a full time job as Prof. of Electrical Engineering during his chess career. Carlsen has been pampered by his father and has had few real responsibilities.. It really is beginning to show now...

I don't think the chess is hard for them.

I think it's an ego thing mixed with borderline crazy guy syndrome.

We have all seen horrendous blunders by the best players.
They are not God's.

They have to win the World Championship and then die to become God's.
so true..😀

Why should Carlsen, or even I, take financial advice from someone who has a computer engine and a mattress in his parents' basement?

Greenpawn : yes putting it back to three years is probably best for everyone involved. Magnus just wants to be in same category with Morphy & Fischer ...
