A game I lost today. See if you can work out how Black managed to lose in three moves from this position:

Could be the old interference move backfiring?

28...Nd4
29.Bxd4 Kxd6
30.Bb6+ Ke7
31.Bc5+

Nothing like the misery of a fellow chess-player just after blundering to cheer us up, eh?! Shame on you Greenspawn : )

Yep. That's what happened.

After the game he gleefully showed me that it was all unsound - after 28. Nd4 29. Bxd4 exd4 30. R1xd4 Bxh3 I would have remained a pawn up. However I was sure that he had simply overlooked 28. ... Nd4 and played 29. ... Kxd6 instantly.

Can you really take on h3 in this line though? After 30...Bxh3 White can play 31.f3 (intending to trap the bishop with g4) Without moving the pieces around a board I can't be sure, but it's possible that 31...Bc8 is forced! Pretty strange if it's true?!

That's actually what we (my teammates and I, my opponent had gone home by then) came up with in the pub (*) afterwards. Coupled with a well timed e5 we reckoned White might well have had the better chances anyway.

(*) £3.30 for a pint of guiness! I've got to start winning again, I can't afford to drown my sorrows at those prices.
