Here's a five minute blitz I played. I know, both sides made horrid mistakes but it was probably one of the most fun games I've played.

Whenever you move 28 times in a game and 10 of them are king moves, you know you're not in great shape... 🙂

in a similarly crap but much quieter vein:

I like to think I had a good game even without the free rook, but it sure helped. But mostly I just like the cute mating position.

This is the only Caro-Kann I have saved from Blitz - I seem to play the Sicilian mainly at fast speeds, though this isn't a conscious decision - and it looks like a fairly strightforward game with lots of exchanges, White missing the reason he can't recapture at the very end.

Here's a long manoeuvring game - Black doesn't move anything to his fourth rank until his 14th move, nothing crosses the middle of the board until move 15, and there are no captures until move 26! Then White runs away with it.

Liked this one from Chessicle's post.

It looks like a position from one of those puzzle books.

Q. Can Black win the d-pawn with 1...cxd4

In this position it is rather trivial - yes Black can win a pawn. If the rook on e1 is on d1, then the answer is still yes (as Chessicle's game).

Hahaha. That last comment cracked me up. I totally imagined that in a Jack Sparrow voice. But where has white's king gone?

I screwed up the fen.

Well actually it was the interior gubbings of the RHP site what did it.
I've got an OTB grade of over 2000 - I don't make mistakes like that.

(I'll try again - this time with an added piece of chess history).

Hi Chaps,
This is a good one. Black to play.
Can Black safely capture the d-pawn - work out all the captures
on d4 and see if you can spot the sting in the tail.

The Fen is created using Forsyth Notation.

David Forsyth (1854-1909) was actually fora period of time
(I cannot recall when) the secretary of the Edinburgh Chess Club.

I was live in caretaker there for 5-6 years.
One day whilst I was shifting old boxes full of chess stuff about I
happened upon an old notebook.

It contained a list of members and subs paid from the 1800's.
At the back of the notebook, in pencil, was a position in Forsyth
notation, written by Forsyth himself.
I tried to re-creat the position but it there was a mistake in the
notation!!

He never put the last squares if they were blank.
For example in the one above fen. The first line should read.

2rr2k1/

His style was 2rr2k/ not adding the remaining blank squares on a rank.

That's interesting, because that was how I was taught how to do Forsyth Notation. However it makes sense for each rank to add up to eight as it makes it obvious if a mistake has been made.

Did you purloin the notebook, or anything else of interest which you found during your tenure as caretaker of Edinburgh Chess Club?
