Yakov Estrin (you missed him) is another CC world champion and another who was likely better than Berliner.
The rest are all great CC players, mostly world champions but not all. Scmid is indeed Lothar, could have been 3rd or 4th CC world champion but chose to concentrate on OTB chess instead. Jonathan Penrose is the brother of Roger Penrose, the physicist.

I don't disagree with the original list at all but do feel Morphy should have been included. And I know it is impossible to compare Apples to Apples due to the time period, but was Fischer not the greatest of all? In his prime against anyone on the list in their prime, does Fischer triumph?

Have you read 64 Great Chess Games by Harding. My mate Yakov does not
come out of that too well. Bit of controversy about his world title.

Hardin and others voted Estrin v Berliner 1965 as the greatest game of
chess ever played.
You play it over without any notes and it's just another good game of chess.
It's when you dive in and see those mind-boggling variations that Estrin
and Berliner had to plough through then you realise what a game of chess it is.
Some of the positions Hardin looks at are amazing.
What Estrin book are you waiting on?
I'm glad to see my old mate Yakov's name mentioned in such company
but I have to warn you. don't trust him. Look at every variation he suggests.
His book on The Two Knights is a work of love for the fantastic and some quite
brilliant (pre-computer )analysis went into that book.
But look and you will find a wee wrinkle here, a wee sneaky pete move there.
(stonking great hole in one game that turns a 1-0 into 0-1).
And that is why I owe Estrin a lot. His wonderful variations sucked me in
and I pulled them to pieces and put them back again.
Sometimes as he left them, other times with an added shot or two.
Sometimes he would just leave you with '..and White has a good attack.'
White by now is bit down and you are now on your own - so it's time
to dive in and find the wins. a brilliant chess book.
I hate to think of the hours me and that one book have spent together.
It's a tactical training manuel. I loved every minute of it.
